Alpine hiking tour across the cirque of Klafferkessel:

Klafferkessel is cirque with a lake district in the Schladminger Tauern mountain range. The lakes are situated between the Untertal valley and its side valley "Steinriesental" at an altitude of 2,300 meters above sea level.

Klafferkessel consists of two linked cirques and there are more than 30 lakes within the protected area. Some of the lakes are still frozen even in July. The largest lakes are "Unterer Klaffersee", "Rauhenbergsee", and "Oberer Klaffersee". The lake district is surrounded by some dominant peaks - among them:

  • "Greifenstein" (2,397 m)
  • "Greifenberg" (2,618 m)
  • "Waldhorn" (2,702 m)

The hiking trail between Gollinghütte and Preintalerhütte through the cirque of Klafferkessel is part of the "Schladminger Tauern Alpine Trail"

Klafferkessel is an area abounding in water and one of the districts most rich in water in the entire Alps. Also, it is core of Wild Waters in Rohrmoos-Untertal. The hiking tour - starting from the "Seeleiten car park" in Untertal valley - therefore is also called "Klafferkessel - a tour for kings".

The hike leads through alpine terrain and stands out through the excellent view to the mountains of the Schladminger Tauern mountain range - among them the highest peak of the "Niedere Tauern" mountain range - Hochgolling (2,863 m).

The scenery invites for a rest and it is almost a duty to walk barefooted for a couple of meters on the soft meadows at the lakes. Doing so, be careful to avoid damaging the mosses and sensitive flora.
