A hike to the Sonntagskar lakes in Untertal is an insider tip among hikers. The lakes are framed by some of the tallest peaks of the Schladminger Tauern mountain range.

The trail head is at Seeleiten parking in Untertal and you then follow the alpine trail through "Höllschlucht" canyon to lake Riesachsee and further on towards Preintalerhütte. Passing Preintalerhütte and nearby Waldhornalm the trail then takes course through the valley bottom until you reach an escarpment above which the Lower lake Sonntagskar is located. Along the lake the trail n° 784 ascends gently towards the Upper lake Sonntagskar.

The mighty peaks of Waldhorn (2,702 m) and Kieseck (2,681 m) frame the cirque of Sonntagskar with their high rock faces and make sure that there is an ice sheet on the lakes right into the summer, which supports the arctic character of the lakes. To the North of the lakes the highest peak that is located entirely in Styria rises into the sky - Hochwildstelle (2,747 m).
